Bomb Calorimeter

What is a Bomb Calorimeter?

The calorimeter which determines the amount of heat liberated by a sample when completely burnt. Calorimeter is an apparatus for measuring the quantity of heat energy release or absorbed during process. The emitted heat increases the temperature of the water covering the bomb by combusting the fuel. The total heat of the fuel is determined by increasing the temperature and the real mass of the fuel.

The bomb calorimeter is an instrument used to measure the heat of reaction at a fixed volume and the measured heat which is called the change of internal energy (ΔE).

Historically, burning a sample enclosed in a high pressure oxygen environment is known as Oxygen Bomb Calorimetry and the vessel containing the sample is known as an Oxygen Bomb. The terms bomb and vessel are used interchangeably.

Uses of Bomb Calorimeter

Bomb Calorimeter An apparatus primarily used for measuring heats of combustion. The reaction takes place in a closed space known as the calorimeter proper, in controlled thermal contact with its surroundings, the jacket, at constant temperature.

A bomb calorimeter measures the quantity of heat energy released or absorbed in various samples and is employed in various fields:

  • Coal and coke, all varieties and types
  • Fuel oil, both heavy and light varieties
  • Gasoline, all motor fuel and aviation types, jet fuels, all varieties
  • Combustible wastes and refuse disposal
  • Foodstuffs and supplements for human nutrition
  • Forage crops and supplements for animal nutrition
  • Building materials
  • Explosives and heat powders
  • Rocket fuels and related propellants
  • Thermodynamic studies of combustible materials
  • Energy balance studies in ecology
  • Instruction in basic thermodynamic methods

Automatic Bomb Calorimeter Suppliers

Parr 6000 series calorimeters features high degree of automation with touch screen operation, Linux operating system with fifth generation microprocessor control. Parr 6000 series has many models employing removable as well as fixed bomb and bucket designs. Removable bomb calorimeters are the most acceptable type of calorimeters. In this type of calorimeters the bomb and bucket are removed from the calorimeter for loading the sample and filling the bucket with the carefully measured amount of water which absorbs the energy released in the combustion. These type of calorimeters meet the BIS standards. Parr manufactures Oxygen Bomb calorimeters based on various calorimetry methods and modes to meet ASTM, BIS, BS, DIN & other standards ASTM D240 /ASTM D4809 /ASTM D5468 /ASTM D5865/ ASTM E711/ ISO 1928/ AS1038.5 / BS1016 / IS 1350-Part 2
